A Comparative Study On Four Main Characters In Stand By Me Movie

Stand By Me tells the story of a young man who is ready to make a career out of it. It was inspired by Stephen King’s short story entitled ‘The Body’. The film follows four boys, all friends, who set out on a quest to find the body of the dead. One of their brothers is constantly talking about it.

Four boys live in Castle Rock, Oregon. Their mission is to find a missing child. Three days before Labor Day 1959, Gordie lachance, Vern Tesso and Chris Chambers set out to find Ray Brower’s remains. The journey leads the boys to realize how their friends are different. Gordie Lachance, Vern Tesso, Chris Chambers and Teddy Duchamp discover that Ray Brower is missing from the town. This is due to Gordie’s brother Denis being killed in a car accident. Gordie struggles to attract attention from his parents at first and is frequently compared to Denis. Often, Gordie is confronted with questions such “Why don’t we have friends as Denis?” and “If he plays football the same way his brother and his father.” This theme is consistent throughout the journey. It is still a mystery if it is solved. Chris Chambers, his best friend from the group, is always there to comfort him.

Gordie is also one of the more reserved and quieter members of our group. This could mean that there is a sudden and significant change in the atmosphere at the house. His mother only acknowledged him and he was promptly dismissed by his father. Macionis (2014) suggests that Gordie may be suffering from isolation and misfortune due to the loss of power. Denis isn’t his primary support member in a family home, making it even more difficult than the dinner scene.

He may be feeling depressed after Denis’s passing. He feels guilty that he didn’t cry at Denis’s funeral. You can see all the emotions in this film: sadness, apathy.

Vern Tesso doesn’t reveal much about his family life. His mother did the cleaning in his room and he is trying desperately to locate a jar full of pennies hidden under the house deck. This is how he learned about the hidden location of the body. It is not difficult to describe Vern, a wimp who makes a mountain more often then not from an anthill, at first glance. You get upset when you lose a comb.

With closer examination, it seems possible that Vern could be suffering from a little panic attack. The Macionis (2014) textbook defines panicking as an individual behavior where people react with frantic behavior to fear. Vern holds onto the railroad while the train travels at high speed towards Gordie and him. Under Gordie’s panic attack, Vern encourages Gordie to get out and they make it safely. Vern could have survived without Gordie, but he would likely have died if he wasn’t there. The boys are required to protect animals later in the film. Vern is extremely concerned about any sound, no matter how harmless it may seem like an owl or a cricket. He perceives them as threats.

Vern can also be considered as the lowest person in the food chains. His social status and position. He is often a coward and lack of knowledge. Seen in many scenes, but the most prominent is his fight or flee response at the movie’s end when his brothers and their gang arrive unannounced.

Chris Chambers is a complex character. Chris is the leader of the four. He is so kind and caring to each member of the group. It’s easy to say that his leadership style is expressive. Teddy decides to play dodge and the first train stops the friends’ food conversation. Chris runs towards the train and grabs Teddy’s hand. While the others wait, Teddy is unable to stop the train from coming at him. Gordie finds refuge in Chris for his family crises. He encourages Gordie to write and tells him that he doesn’t have to hate his dad. Gordie can almost be described as extended family. After his run-in with Milo, he also sides with Teddy. Chambers ensures that everyone is well and that there are no difficult feelings.

He is, however, known outside the group as a bad boy from a terrible family. He was convicted of a minor thief who stole milk money. The teacher he stole money from was not pleased with his actions and decided to make a slur against him. Since the teacher and, if necessary, the police were in a higher position, it made them seem legitimate and respectable. He cannot prove that he regrets the money being taken away and is therefore labeled a thief by the locals. Chamber is called a “victim” of the labeling theory. That’s how Chris describes himself.

This little accident had a profound impact on Castle Rock’s entire residence. Even though he lived in a small area, it is obvious that he was discriminated against. This scene does not show it directly, but Gordie has a conversation that Chris has with Gordie. He is angry that Gordie will keep him in a class for woodworking and that Gordie will never give him the chance to be smart enough to study at fancy classes. He may have been in this situation before. He finishes his advanced education under the tutelage of under-trained teachers and becomes a lawyer.

Last but not least, Teddy Duchamp is the wildest thrill seeker among the group. It is possible to ask him if his suicidal tendencies are a bit extreme. He is the most insane of the group. He switches between madness and happiness at the flip of a switch. When things go wrong, he insults everyone.

He is the son of an alcoholic lunatic father. Family violence is when a person’s anger causes them to erupt and cause emotional, physical, or sexual abuse to another member of their family. Although it isn’t known if Teddy was also injured, it is reasonable to assume that Teddy and his mother were both emotionally hurt. Teddy father also burned the ear with a hot, well-drank stove. His hearing and eye sight were permanently damaged. This would in modern society be considered a crime, but Teddy’s father is currently in a mental hospital.

His father raised him and he has a tendency to violence. Gordie gets chased by Chopper his dog at the junkyard. Milo, the dog’s owner, starts to make verbal insults to the boys. He then moves on from person-to-person until Teddy feels something about his father. He ignores it initially, but then Milo starts to verbally abuse Teddy and his father. Vern, Chris and Teddy suggest that Gordie go back to Teddy. He responds by using vulgar language, which leads to a small fist fight. He doesn’t care if he’s provoked.

Oddly, even though his father has been abusive to him, he shows some respect for his dad. It is likely that he was a World War II soldier who stormed the Normandy beaches. This is evident in Teddy’s motivations, possibly because he is still able to remember the days when his father was somewhat normal. Teddy is seen in the movie wearing a combat boot and a dog tags necklace. He clearly dreams of joining the Army like his father.

Stand By Me started as a movie about four boys who were trying to find bodies. But along the journey, the true story became the friendships and support systems that surrounded them. They struggled against nature, but also against each other over a two-day trip. They were able to overcome each other and gain a greater understanding of their individual emotional struggles. They learned that even though they could not solve their problems and would not for a long period of time, it was important to be there for each other.
