A Review Of A Wrinkle In Time By Madeleine L’engle

Madeleine L’Engle’s book A Wrinkle In Time is a novel that blends science fiction with fantasy. This novel is plot-based, and obstacles will always be present to prevent you from completing your task. In this novel, the conflict is between person and self as well as person and supernatural. The imagery and detail in the book was astounding. The message is that individuality and fallibility can be admired and celebrated. L’Engle’s effective use of techniques transports the reader along the journey through space and time. This novel has a plethora of themes, which create a whirlwind of emotions for readers. It opens the door to a lot more conclusions not just in children but in adults.

L’Engle’s novel is a great adventure story with many lessons. I learned several things from this novel. One being the nature or beauty. The theme contrasts exterior beauty and inner essence. Meg thinks that having braces and glasses, or knotted hair will make her less popular. L’Engle constantly reminds the readers that they are more then their looks. She says, “No Meg. You are more. Charles Wallace is different in more than just appearance. It’s also in his essence. The book really touched me, as I can see that most people will be able to relate to the story. Many people are bullied and have low self-esteem because people judge others if they do something different. Many people will judge a person by their appearance if they don’t have the perfect teeth, hair that is silky and smooth or perfect eyesight. The message is powerful because it brings out something in the reader that is positive. Meg, who is concerned about Charles Wallace’s appearance and peculiar speech pattern, believes that Wallacewallace could be targeted for the same reasons she was. Meg: “No. People are not just their looks. Charles Wallace is different in more than just his appearance. It’s also about his essence. Mrs. Murry tells Meg it’s Charles’ inner “essence”, not his physical appearance, that makes him unique. It’s not his exterior manner of speaking that will help him gain a friend. But it is his special character that will propel them forward. It all falls under Identity and Appearance. I think that many people, like Calvin, hide their true identities to fit in. Others are picked on because they’re oddballs.

This novel has a profound impact on adults and children alike. L’Engle’s book successfully conveyed the various messages and its purpose. This novel shows that love is the strongest way to communicate. “Calvin pressed his leg against Meg’s and Fort put a hand on her elbow”. She was so happy at their concern that she lost all fear and followed Charles Wallace to the darkest recesses of her house. Meg will not be afraid if she feels loved, no matter how dangerous the situation is. We learned that love gives you the power to accomplish the impossible. Love can help you see through the superficial and reveal the real truth. Love destroys difference and brings people together.
