An Analysis Of Noah Berlatsky’s Article About Beyonce

Noah Berlatsky’s Beyonce Sexterrorist: A Threat to Conservatives and Liberals Both” explores the differences as well as similarities between Bill O’Rielly (conservative) and Bell Hooks (liberal), in terms of what Beyonce’s example is. Noah Berlatsky contrasts and compares perspectives from opposites within the political world. Bill O’Reilly came from a different side of politics than Bell Hooks, but they both had the same concerns about the video.

Bill O’Reilly a conservative Fox News pundit, “used a portion of his program to express shock over Beyonce’s Video “Partition”, where she shows herself having sexual relations in a limo while mentioning Monica Lewinsky”. Bell Hooks, an liberal feminist scholar “taken issue with Beyonce’s Time magazine Cover, where the singer posed naked”. O’Reilly stated that Beyonce’s Time magazine cover was “offensive to girls, especially those of color”. He asked why Beyonce would do this. Hooks’ opinion about Beyonce: an “antifeminist terrorist” who is “particularly concerned with the impact Beyonce has on girls of all races”. Both are concerned that Beyonce sexualized her body and would have a negative impact on girls.

In modern society, parents allow their children to attend concerts featuring singers like Nicki Mannaj and Beyonce performing songs like “Feeling Myself”. Their performances and lyrics are, to put it mildly, sexual. For me, this is absolutely disgraceful. Both artists know their biggest fans are young people. I believe that everyone who is famous should be aware of the impact they have on others and take steps to protect the youth. The public will hold a person accountable for their actions if they are famous. All those who are famous must be aware of their impact on the general public. They should also avoid endangering youth.

O’Reilly, as well Hooks, both speak of the “brutalizing impact of Beyonce nudity”. In the modern world, it is not uncommon for the previously unthinkable to be merely frowned at. I remember being forbidden to watch PG-13 and rated R movies before I reached high school. Although I realize that most parents do not have the same strict rules as mine, I’m sure that many parents raised their children to be protected from any material that might harm their development. It’s a new world, where cussing is now commonplace in music and on television.

Parents of today allow their children to attend concerts in which singers like Nicki Mannaj and Beyonce perform songs like “Feeling Myself”. Their performances and lyrics are, to put it mildly, sexual. I find this a complete disgrace knowing that their biggest fans are young people. I believe that everyone who is famous should be aware of the impact they have on others and take steps to protect the youth. The public will hold a person accountable for their actions if they are famous. All those who are famous must be aware of their impact on the general public. They should also avoid endangering youth.

Noah and I both agree that Beyonce may have something to share about “sexualization, power” even though we disagree on some of her actions. Beyonce has a great voice and is beautiful. This, combined with her wealth as an African American woman and the influence she has on other women is immense. Beyonce is in a position to influence young women positively, but it’s important that she always be mindful of how her actions can affect their development psychologically. It is important that people from all sides of politics can agree on the basic moral standards and values to teach the youth.
