Many times a piece is made into a movie, musical or other form of entertainment. The director may alter the plot or the theme to make it more appealing to the audience. Bernard Shaw’s Pygmalion plays a good example. Shaw’s ideas and purpose in the play were misinterpreted to the point that he had to write an Epilogue in order to correct the injustice. He was blunt in his explanations of Shaw’s purposes and points so that the uninformed public couldn’t discount Shaw’s theme and transform it into a happy ending. Shaw’s fury was triggered by the director’s choice of dialogue and characters. The director had a specific purpose in constructing the roles of characters. This was achieved by adding scenes, songs, and changing dialogue. Other scenes were omitted and other characters’ roles minimized. Henry Higgins was the one character who was removed from Shaw’s whole purpose. Henry Higgins changed his outlook and his profession. He also had a relationship with Eliza. Shaw’s overall purpose and outlook was improved by Higgins. His character was strengthened and changed by multiple scenes, both omitted and added. Higgins was able to tell the crowd his native language and origin in a street corner scene. This was to demonstrate Higgins abilities and profession. Higgins has added a dialogue to express his extreme views on grammar, speech, and punctuation. This quote is the best. It’s not included in the play. Any woman who makes these depressing and disgusting comments has no right whatsoever to be anywhere. Remember that you are a human with a soul. Remember that Shakespeare, Milton, or the Bible are your natural language. You don t have to croon like a bilious peacock. The song Why can t English teach their children how to speak is a follow-up to this quote. All of these things greatly improve Higgins views about language. Later, Higgins would share his views about women with Colonel Pickering via the song Why can’t you make a woman more like a male? Higgins states in the play that he is an old bachelor. However, the movie over-dramatizes the situation. The movie’s greatest contribution is the dialogue that Higgins uses to express his desire to take on the bet. His dialogue expressing his purpose for taking on the bet is the best. This line perfectly captures Higgins’ purpose. Shaw was furious about the relationship between Higgins, Eliza and Eliza. The love they have now is not condescending but will last a lifetime. It shows Eliza’s lessons, which are quickly forgotten. We see the transformation in their relationship at this point. Higgins starts the drills by making Eliza repeat a phrase every evening. He tells her that you will get to know the Lord much better if you don’t offend his ears. Later, he makes her swallow a marble and insists on giving her more. This is Shaw’s favorite character. Higgins assures Eliza that she will succeed for the first and only time, late at night. Eliza can now communicate clearly and execute all drills flawlessly. This was due to Higgins affirmation. Eliza admiringly sings a song to express her feelings. Higgins then expresses his desire to reward Eliza’s achievements. Later scenes reveal Higgins stubbornness and determination, as well as his confidence in Eliza. Higgins worries about Eliza at ball, but there are many other fantasies. The movie begins with Higgins not even thinking twice about Eliza s welfare. Eliza rejects Higgins, and he expresses love and regret for Eliza. Higgins overjoyed to be reunited with Eliza in the final scene, but he stifles his joy by saying, “Where the devil is my slippers?” Shaw was furious when Eliza lost her independence.

The musical was a good addition to the play in some ways, but it did not fulfill Shaw’s intent of making Eliza self-sufficient. The book ends with Eliza as the teacher and alpha, and Higgins the outcast who is rebuked by society. But, Eliza’s and Higgins’ love is revealed in the musical. Eliza will be able to fetch Higgins his slippers. Higgins character grows through the pathetic portrayal Eliza. This is one more way Higgins character has been strengthened. These are the two main differences in the musical adaptation of the play. If you ask someone if they have ever read a book, or if they have seen a musical or movie that is a substitute for it, they will say that they believe the two are identical. The essay shows that original literature can differ from the movie or novel. This is because not all literature appeals to the same audience or meets their needs for tranquility and perfect endings. A book cannot be judged by its movie.
